New York auto show: Scion reveals U.S.-bound 2011 iQ:

Wednesday, 31 March 2010

A year after the debut of the concept version, Scion has confirmed that the iQ micro-subcompact will come to the United States in early 2011. The production car was shown on Wednesday at the New York auto show.

Billed as the world’s smallest four-passenger vehicle, the interior features slightly staggered front seats allowing an adult to sit behind the front passenger and a child or small package to ride behind the driver. For increased cargo-hauling ability, the rear seats are 50/50 split and can be folded flat to provide enough room for a couple of golf bags.

Helping to maintain its small proportions, the iQ features a compact air-conditioning system, an inverted front-mounted differential, an electric power-steering system with a compact steering column and a flat gas tank mounted beneath the floor.

Power comes from a 1.3-liter I4 which Scion says will produce more than 90 hp mated to a continuously variable transmission. Scion expects the iQ to return a combined fuel economy in the high 30s.

Safety features include stability control, antilock brakes with electronic brake distribution, brake assist, traction control and the world’s first rear-window curtain airbag.
